For many women, changes in sexual health begin gradually.
A decrease in sensation. Difficulty achieving orgasm. Vaginal dryness. Discomfort during intimacy. Occasional urinary leakage. A loss of responsiveness that can affect confidence, relationships, and overall quality of life.
These concerns are often dismissed as an inevitable part of aging, childbirth, or menopause. Yet they represent real physiologic changes that deserve thoughtful evaluation and appropriate treatment.
Over the past fifteen years, I have had the privilege of helping women navigate these challenges through advances in regenerative medicine. I began working with Dr. Charles Runels during the early development of the O-Shot® procedure and remain actively involved in physician and provider education through my faculty role with the Cellular Medicine Association.
What attracted me to this field from the beginning was its ability to address function rather than simply mask symptoms. The O-Shot® is one of the earliest examples of regenerative medicine being applied specifically to women’s intimate health, and it remains one of the most rewarding procedures I perform.
What Is the O-Shot®?
The O-Shot® utilizes Platelet Rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM), a highly concentrated preparation derived from a patient’s own blood.
PRFM contains growth factors and regenerative signaling molecules that support tissue repair, circulation, vascular health, and cellular regeneration.
After a small blood draw, the sample is processed using specialized technology to isolate and concentrate these regenerative components. Following topical anesthesia, the PRFM is carefully injected into specific areas of the clitoral and vaginal tissues.
The procedure typically takes less than an hour, requires little to no downtime, and allows patients to return to most normal activities the same day.
How the O-Shot® Works
As women age, particularly during and after menopause, hormonal changes can affect blood flow, collagen production, tissue thickness, lubrication, and nerve sensitivity.
These changes can contribute to:
- Reduced sexual sensation
- Difficulty achieving orgasm
- Vaginal dryness
- Painful intimacy
- Urinary leakage
- Loss of confidence and intimacy
The growth factors contained within PRFM help stimulate the body’s natural regenerative processes.
This includes support for:
- New blood vessel formation
- Improved circulation
- Collagen production
- Tissue remodeling
- Enhanced nerve function
The goal is not to artificially create sensation. The goal is to support healthier tissue function so that the body can perform more optimally on its own.
Who Is a Candidate?
I most commonly recommend the O-Shot® for women experiencing:
- Difficulty achieving orgasm
- Reduced orgasmic intensity
- Vaginal dryness
- Decreased sexual sensation
- Discomfort during intimacy
- Mild urinary stress incontinence
- Menopausal changes affecting intimate health
- Postpartum changes that have not fully resolved
Many of these women have already tried lubricants, hormone therapy, pelvic floor exercises, or other interventions without achieving the results they hoped for.
While those treatments remain valuable, the O-Shot® offers a different approach by addressing tissue quality, circulation, and regenerative potential.
Is the O-Shot® Painful?
This is one of the most common questions I receive.
Most women are surprised by how comfortable the procedure is. A topical anesthetic is applied prior to treatment, and the injections themselves are brief and well tolerated.
Patients typically describe pressure rather than pain. The vast majority return to normal daily activities immediately after treatment.
How Soon Will I See Results?
The regenerative process begins immediately, but tissue remodeling takes time.
Some women notice improvements in lubrication, sensitivity, or responsiveness within several weeks. For others, changes occur more gradually.
Most patients experience progressive improvement over two to three months as tissue regeneration continues.
How Long Do Results Last?
Results vary based on age, hormonal status, overall health, and tissue quality.
In my experience, most women enjoy benefits for approximately twelve to eighteen months. Some maintain improvements longer, while others choose periodic maintenance treatments to support ongoing results.
Can the O-Shot® Be Combined With Other Treatments?
Absolutely.
One of the advantages of regenerative medicine is its ability to complement other evidence based therapies.
Depending on a woman’s needs, I may recommend combining the O-Shot® with:
- Hormone optimization
- Pelvic floor therapy
- Vaginal rejuvenation procedures
- Nutritional and metabolic interventions
- Lifestyle strategies that support healthy aging
The most successful outcomes often occur when intimate health is addressed within the broader context of overall wellness.
Are There Side Effects?
Because PRFM is created from the patient’s own blood, adverse reactions are uncommon.
Temporary swelling, mild tenderness, sensitivity, or bruising may occur but typically resolve within several days.
As with any medical procedure, a comprehensive consultation and medical evaluation are essential to determine candidacy and ensure safety.
Who Is Not a Candidate?
The O-Shot® may not be appropriate for women with:
- Active infections
- Certain blood disorders
- Severe platelet dysfunction
- Specific clotting abnormalities
- Certain medications that affect platelet function
A detailed consultation allows us to determine whether treatment is appropriate and whether additional therapies should be considered.
Why This Matters
Throughout my career, one theme has remained consistent: women often suffer silently when it comes to intimate health.
Many are uncomfortable discussing these concerns. Others have been told there is nothing that can be done. Some simply assume these changes are an unavoidable consequence of aging.
The reality is far more encouraging.
Sexual health is closely connected to emotional well-being, self-confidence, relationships, and overall quality of life. When intimate health declines, the impact often extends far beyond the bedroom.
As clinicians, we have a responsibility to acknowledge these concerns and offer evidence informed solutions that respect both the science and the patient experience.
The O-Shot® represents one of several tools available to help women restore comfort, confidence, and function through regenerative medicine. It is not a miracle treatment, nor is it appropriate for everyone. However, for properly selected candidates, it can be a meaningful part of a comprehensive approach to women’s health and wellness.
After caring for thousands of women and participating in the evolution of regenerative medicine since the earliest days of the O-Shot®, I remain optimistic about the future of women’s intimate health. We are finally beginning to have the conversations that should have started decades ago.
Intimate health is health. Treat it that way.
